Modul-AIR ALL-E

The Modul-AIR ALL-E Exhaust Air Heat Pump (EAHP) and optional Green Comfort provides mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), domestic hot water (DHW) & heating via radiators or underfloor (UFH).

This solution is best suited for new build flat developments. It uses the waste heat from the extract ventilation through a heat pump cycle to provide the heating and hot water for the dwelling. When fitted with the optional Green Comfort the supply air to the habitable space is pre-heated to increase the occupants comfort level and thus reducing the load on the radiators or underfloor heating in the dwelling. With regulations continuing to develop a typical dwellings heating load is reducing while the requirement for more renewable heat sources is increasing. With regard to the UK this solution is future proofing the development post Future Homes 2025 standards. In Ireland this solution exceeds NZEB building standards.

The Modulair All-E complies with the new Part L of the building regulations. The carbon emissions factor for electricity has been reduced by 74% in comparison to previous levels. It now stands at 0.136kgCO2/kWh. This is the single biggest driver for heat pumps in new build dwellings. As can be seen in the carousel above, the future homes standards due to take effect in 2025 requires a new dwelling to have 75% less carbon emissions than that the notional dwelling. The Modulair plays a key part in achieving this. A decentralised solution like the Modulair has no requirement for a heat distribution network running throughout the development. This, in addition to the capital benefit, has a significantly positive impact on the overheating risk analysis of the building as can be determined by following the CIBSE TM59 methodology. Additionally, as the system provides summer mechanical purge ventilation it may reduce the equivalent openable area of your windows.

The Modulair All-E is the most suitable technology to achieve compliance with NZEB in new build apartment developments. The system will overachieve these regulations which is a key requirement for EU Taxonomy legislation which is the European wide “Green” classification of buildings. This is critically important for companies to avail of low interest rate “Green” funding or additionally, to purchase, forward purchase or forward fund developments.

Separately to this the Modulair has a significant impact on the buildings performance in the commonly used Home Performance Index (HPI). The building sector represents 39% of Europe’s overall carbon emissions, 28% from operational emissions energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% are from materials and construction.

To reduce overall emissions, the sector must improve building energy performance, decrease building materials’ carbon footprint, multiply policy commitments alongside action and increase investment in energy efficiency. From a building services perspective there are some key metrics needed to comply with, covered by local legislation. The ModulAIR range of EAHP’s cover up to 4 of these (ventilation, heating, DHW & cooling) in one standalone locally located unit. The ModulAIR increases energy efficiency, reducing operational & embodied carbon levels.

Ventilation

When there is no heating or hot water load the Modul-AIR ALL-E operates as a standard MVHR system when fitted with the Green Comfort module. If the Green Comfort module is not fitted it operates as a cMEV system. The ventilation rates are in line with Part F (Ireland, England, Wales) and Part CCC (Scotland) boost and trickle rates. Boost can be provided via a number of options such as manual, humidity or CO2. When there is a heat or hot water demand the ventilation rate increases to boost level. The energy is extracted from the stale air and the now cool air is exhausted to outside.

At the same time fresh air is been drawn in from outside either directly to the habitable space where the Green Comfort has not been fitted or through the Green Comfort where it has. In the case of the Green Comfort system the fresh air is pre-heated to a set temperature before been supplied to the habitable rooms. Using the Green Comfort module reduces the need for individual wall openings per habitable room to a single penetration for the dwelling. This reduces the potential for noise pollution.

Ventilation

Storeroom Design Considerations

Certain measures must be considered when designing the store room for the Modulair All-E, GreenComfort and cylinder. Firstly, the Modulair must be mounted on a suitably structured wall. It cannot be mounted on a wall adjoining a bedroom.

Clearance distances on both the heat pump and cylinder must be adhered to in order to provide suitable maintenance access for the system. Careful consideration must be taken to ensure these clearance distances aren’t restricted by standard door head heights.

Ducting Design Considerations

A good ducting design should look to minimise system pressure drops. One way excessive pressure drops can happen is if ducting sizes are too small. We recommend using 220x90mm on main runs and on signle branches this can be reduced to 204x60mm.

Another way excessive pressure drops can happen is if the external vents are not adequately sized.

These must be a double airbrick or a vent of equal free area. The exhaust and fresh air supply, either directly or to the GreenComfort must be 220x90mm and insulated if in a heated space.

Heat Emitter Design

The Modul-AIR ALL-E & Green Comfort work seamlessly with either radiators or underfloor heating. As with all low temperature heat pumps there are a number of design parameters that differ with high temperature conventional systems.

Radiators

Following an accurate heat loss calculation suitably sized steel, aluminium or fan coil radiators should be selected on the maximum design parameters of 45/40 flow & return. TRV’s should not be fitted on the radiators and the minimum pipe work feeding the radiators should be 15mm or greater. The system should be designed to aid the balancing, such as reverse return circuits. Assuming the dwelling is less than 100m2 (IE) or 150m2 (UK) one heating zone and corresponding thermostat should be fitted. For dwellings greater than 100m2 (IE) the bedroom areas should be zoned together. Modul-AIR thermostats must be used to control each zone.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating must always be fitted in a screed or cement based system. Pipe centres should be no greater than 150mm if using 16mm pipe or 100mm centres if using 12mm pipe. As with radiators control if the dwelling is less than 100m2 (IE) or 150m2 (UK) one heating zone and corresponding thermostat should be fitted. For dwellings greater than 100m2 (IE) the bedroom areas should be zoned together. Modul-AIR thermostats must be used to control each zone.
